    Simulation of the transit-time optical stochastic cooling process in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring

    In preparation for a demonstration of optical stochastic cooling in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have developed a particle tracking simulation to study the relevant beam dynamics. Optical radiation emitted in the pickup undulator gives a momentum kick to that same particle in the kicker undulator. The optics of the electron bypass from pickup to kicker couples betatron amplitude and momentum offset to path length so that the momentum kick reduces emittance and momentum spread. Nearby electrons contribute an incoherent noise. Layout of the bypass line is presented that accommodates optics with a range of transverse and longitudinal cooling parameters. The simulation is used to determine cooling rates and their dependence on bunch and lattice parameters for bypass optics with distinct emittance and momentum acceptance

    Nonfactorizable contributions to the decay mode D^0 -> K^0 \bar{K^0}

    We point out that the decay mode D^0 -> K^0 \bar{K^0} has no factorizable contribution. In the chiral perturbation language, treating D^0 as heavy, the O(p) contribution is zero. We calculate the nonfactorizable chiral loop contributions of order O(p^3). Then, we use a heavy-light type chiral quark model to calculate nonfactorizable tree level terms, also of order O(p^3), proportional to the gluon condensate. We find that both the chiral loops and the gluon condensate contributions are of the same order of magnitude as the experimental amplitude.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure

    MINERvA neutrino detector response measured with test beam data

    The MINERvA collaboration operated a scaled down replica of the solid scintillator tracking and sampling calorimeter regions of the MlNERvA detector in a hadron test beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. This paper reports measurements with samples of protons, pions, and electrons from 0.35 to 2.0 GeV/c momentum. The calorimetric response to protons, pions, and electrons is obtained from these data. A measurement of the parameter in Birks\u27 law and an estimate of the tracking efficiency are extracted from the proton sample. Overall the data are well described by a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of the detector and particle interactions with agreements better than 4% for the calorimetric response, though some features of the data are not precisely modeled. These measurements are used to tune the MINERvA detector simulation and evaluate systematic uncertainties in support of the MINERvA neutrino cross-section measurement program.     Susceptibility testing of Haemophilus influenzae— an international collaborative study in quality assessment

    In order to compare the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in different geographical areas, it is necessary to ensure that agreement is achieved between laboratories on the assignment of strains to ‘susceptible' and ‘resistant' categories. An international quality assessment study, involving 15 laboratories in eight countries, was performed to investigate the standard of performance of the susceptibility testing of Haemophilus influenzae. One hundred and fifty strains of H. influenzae were distributed from the London Hospital Medical College (LHMC) to all laboratories who were asked to test the susceptibility of the strains to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, trimethoprim, cephalosporins and ciprofloxacin. Laboratories were also asked to provide the details of methodology to test the susceptibility. Significant discrepancy between the LHMC and the participating laboratories appeared in the detection of resistance to ampicillin (especially β-lactamase-negative strains resistant to ampicillin) as well as the assignment of susceptibility and resistance to chloramphenicol, tetracycline and trimethoprim. Often these reflected the use of inappropriate breakpoints which led to erroneous assignment of susceptibility. Other variations including disc content, medium and supplement, inoculum as well as failure to measure zone sizes properly also led to some repeating anomalie

    Pancreatobiliary versus intestinal histologic type of differentiation is an independent prognostic factor in resected periampullary adenocarcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Resectable adenocarcinomas in the pancreatic head, by definition "periampullary", originate from ampullary, duodenal, biliary, or ductal pancreatic epithelium. Typically, periampullary adenocarcinomas have either intestinal or pancreatobiliary type of differentiation, and the type of differentiation might be prognostically more important than the anatomic site of origin. The aim of the study was to determine whether the histologic type of differentiation is an independent prognostic factor in periampullary adenocarcinoma, and whether tumour origin predicts the prognosis in pancreatobiliary type carcinomas independently of resection margin involvement, tumour size, nodal involvement, perineural and vascular infiltration, and degree of differentiation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Histopathologic variables in 114 consecutively resected periampullary adenocarcinomas of pancreatobiliary (n = 67) and intestinal (n = 47) type differentiation were evaluated using a standardized, systematic protocol for evaluation of the resected specimen (study group). Histologic type of differentiation and tumour origin were compared as predictors of survival, and the results were validated by comparison with a historical control group consisting of 99 consecutive pancreaticoduodenectomies performed before standardization of histopathologic evaluation. Associations between histopathologic variables were evaluated by Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, comparing curves using log-rank test, and by univariate and multivariable Cox regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both in the study group (n = 114) and in the historical control group (n = 99), the histologic type of differentiation independently predicted survival, while tumour origin predicted survival only in univariate analysis. Independent adverse predictors of survival in the study group were pancreatobiliary type differentiation (p < 0.001; HR 3.1; CI 1.8–5.1), regional lymph node involvement (p < 0.001; HR 2.5; CI 1.5–4.4), vessel involvement (p = 0.012; HR 1.9; CI 1.2–3.1), and increasing tumour diameter (measured in cm, p = 0.011; HR 1.3; CI 1.1–1.5). For pancreatobiliary differentiated adenocarcinomas (n = 67), lymph node status, vessel involvement, and tumour diameter remained independent prognostic factors, while tumour origin did not independently predict the prognosis due to significant association with tumour size (p < 0.001) and lymph node involvement (p = 0.004).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Pancreatobiliary versus intestinal type of differentiation independently predicts poor prognosis after pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary adenocarcinoma. Lymph node involvement, vessel infiltration, and increasing tumour diameter are adverse predictors of survival in tumours with pancreatobiliary differentiation.</p

    In the Shadow of Celebrity? World-Class University Policies and Public Value in Higher Education

    The growing popularity of the concept of world-class universities raises the question of whether investing in such universities is a worthwhile use of public resources. Does concentrating public resources on the most excellent universities improve the overall quality of a higher education system, especially if definitions of excellence and world-class are made by external ranking organizations? This paper addresses that question by developing a framework for weighing up trade-offs between institutional and system performance, focusing on the potential system-wide improvements which world-class university programmes (WCUPs) may bring. Because WCUPs are in a relatively early stage of their development, systemic effects are not yet clear. We therefore analyse the ex ante reasons that policy makers have for adopting WCUPs to see if they at least seek to create these systemic benefit
